Board of Ed to reinstate former School Superintendent

The Dunellen Board of Education (BOE) will be holding its regular public meeting in the Dunellen High School Library on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 7:30pm. On its agenda is a vote to approve the return of former superintendent Pio Pennisi for next year’s school term and in the interim, hiring him as a special consultant to the Board of Education on an as-needed basis. After 34 years in the Dunellen School District, Pennisi retired as superintendent in June 2014. He was hired three months later, in September, as the interim superintendent of the Netcong school system, and is still listed as “superintendent” on its official website. According to a September 2014 article printed in the NJ Herald regarding the Netcong position, “Pennisi said he will work two days per week at a rate of about $519 per day as the interim superintendent and will focus on setting the district up for future success in addition to his normal administrative duties.” Continue Reading →

Newark Penn Station’s Track 5 to be closed on evenings

Effective immediately, Newark Penn Station’s Track 5 platform will be closed evenings from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. through 2015 as necessary due to platform reconstruction work and other improvements. During this time, Raritan Valley Line customers will be directed to board from alternate platforms. Customers should check departure monitors and listen for station announcements for track assignments during this time. During the completion of this phase of work, customers will continue to board Raritan Valley Line trains from the east end of the Track 5 platform during the day. Spring Job Fair

More than 50 employers – in key employment sectors such as health care, technology, advance manufacturing, retail, hospitality, financial services and transportation logistics and distribution — will be on hand Wednesday, March 25, at a job fair hosted by the Middlesex County Office of Workforce Development. The companies will recruit for various full-time positions at the fair to be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Woodbridge Community Center Roller Rink, 600 Main St., Woodbridge. The event is being coordinated to assist Middlesex County residents who are unemployed or underemployed. Businesses will conduct on-site interviews while seeking qualified candidates for the job openings that exist within their organizations. “Young Pete” has pharmacy license suspended

The New Jersey State Board of Pharmacy has suspended the license of Peter J. Riccio, a Dunellen pharmacist who illegally distributed a potentially addictive, controlled-substance medication to individuals across the nation through an Internet-based scheme. “This pharmacist chose to put profits ahead of public safety and professional integrity,” Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman said. “He provided an addictive, dangerous, and often-abused drug to patients who had not actually been seen and evaluated by the unscrupulous doctors who allegedly wrote their prescriptions. I applaud the Board of Pharmacy for suspending his license.” Riccio admitted that, in violation of Federal and New Jersey laws, he knowingly distributed the controlled drug to patients who had not actually been seen by doctors. Walgreens in Middlesex to close Feb. 27

Walgreens will be closing its Middlesex, NJ location on Friday, February 27. The pharmacy was one of the few Drug Fair locations that were purchased by Walgreens, prior to Drug Fair declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009. Prescription orders will be transferred to the chain’s Green Brook site on Warrenville Road and Route 22. Other nearby locations include Piscataway and Bound Brook. Items that will not be making the move to Green Brook, including summer clothing, school supplies, and children’s toys have been sharply discounted. Continue Reading →

Lecture regarding British soldiers in Middlesex County, March 1

The Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission will present a free lecture “Wintering in the Raritan River Valley,” which will bring an overlooked perspective to light, the story of the British troops of the American Revolution, and their time encamped in the Raritan River Valley. It is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1. To add to the historical immersion of the event, the lecture will be held inside the Indian Queen Tavern at East Jersey Olde Towne Village, located inside Johnson Park at 1050 River Road in Piscataway. The hardships and challenges of the British will be explored in a multimedia presentation. Lecturer Wade P. Middlesex County seeking Teams for Annual Youth Basketball Tournament

The Middlesex County Office of Parks & Recreation is seeking teams for its annual Board of Chosen Freeholders’ Basketball Tournament, which starts in early March. Games are played Monday through Thursday at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. and will be held at the Middlesex County Vocational-Technical School located at 21 Sutton Lane in Piscataway. The tournament consists of four divisions:
Youth Division #1: (Boys and Girls ages 10 and under)
Youth Division #2: (Boys and Girls ages 12 and under)
Youth Division #3: (Boys and Girls ages 13 and 14)
Youth Division #4: (Boys and Girls ages 15 to 17)
Age cutoff is Oct. 31. Teams must have a minimum of five, but no more than 20, participants. Continue Reading →

Your Tap Water May Taste Different this Winter

As part of its annual pipeline maintenance program, New Jersey American Water (NJAW) will temporarily change the water treatment process at its Raritan-Millstone Water Treatment Plant in Bridgewater and at its Canal Road Water Treatment Plant in Somerset from chloramines (a combination of ammonia and chlorine) to free chlorine. The change will begin on February 1, 2015 and last through March. During this period, customers may notice an increase in the taste and smell of chlorine in their water. NJAW will continuously monitor water quality to ensure that it meets or surpasses federal and state drinking water standards. Open House to view new Middlesex County FEMA Flood Maps

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region II office released updates to the flood hazard maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), for Middlesex County. These updates were preliminarily issued to Middlesex County and incorporated areas on January 1st, 2014. The FIRMs identify areas that have flood risk in Middlesex County. Insurance companies use FIRMs to determine flood insurance rates for buildings and their contents, and lenders utilize this information to determine flood insurance requirements. Middlesex County residents and property owners are encouraged to learn more about their flood risk and the updates shown on the preliminary flood hazard maps by looking up their property’s address in the “What’s my BFE” tool at www.region2coastal.com.
